The Bourdaines and Estagnots beaches are located on the Atlantic coastline of Seignosse, in the Landes department of southwestern France. These sandy beaches are situated over 4 kilometres from the town centre in an area developed for tourism. The bathing zones experience a north-south dominant current and westerly winds typical of the temperate oceanic climate of the region. Water quality is influenced by suspended sand particles from the seafloor stirred by wave action.

Atlantic Ocean. Three sandy beaches: Plage des Bourdaines, Plage des Estagnots (VVF), and Plage des Estagnots. The water is influenced by a dominant north-south current and autumn-winter swells from Atlantic depressions. The seafloor is sandy, causing suspended particles that affect water transparency.

Location

Seignosse, Landes department, Aquitaine region, France. The bathing zones are located at Seignosse-Océan, more than 4 kilometres northeast of the town centre. Access is by paved road with parking available (except at the VVF Estagnots beach). The nearest major city is Bayonne, 24 kilometres to the southwest.

Facilities

Beach clubs and refreshment stands on all beaches except VVF Estagnots. Showers and toilets available on Bourdaines and Estagnots beaches but not at VVF Estagnots. Permanent rescue posts on Bourdaines and Estagnots beaches but not at VVF Estagnots. Rubbish bins on beaches with daily collection. Limited accessibility for people with reduced mobility. Animals are prohibited in regulated bathing zones. Information signage located along beach access near rescue posts.

Season

Early July to end of August for all three beaches.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent under the 2006 Directive. From 2009 to 2012, Bourdaines beach received A-grade classification (good quality water) under the 1975/2006 Directive. In 2012, one non-conformity was recorded for E. coli exceeding the guide value of 100 UFC/100 ml. Since 2000, 8 instances of E. coli exceeding guide values were recorded (6.2% of 130 analyses), with no instances exceeding imperative values. Autocontrol monitoring from 2005 onwards shows good results with no non-conformities in 2012.

Risks

Strong westerly winds occur 2 to 4 times per year with speeds exceeding 100 km/h, typically from October to March. Autumn and winter bring powerful swells from Atlantic depressions generating strong waves. Suspended sand particles from the seafloor reduce water transparency during wave action.
