Žirmūnų is a public bathing beach on the Neris River in Vilnius, Lithuania. The beach is approximately 150 metres long with a natural sandy shore and some vegetation. The bathing water has an average depth of 1.0 metres and a maximum depth of 1.6 metres. The beach can accommodate approximately 1,100 visitors during peak season.

Water

Neris River, a tributary of the Nemuno basin. Water body type 5 classification. Average water depth 1.0 metres, maximum depth 1.6 metres. Average annual discharge in the basin is 87.1 mm.

Location

Located in Vilnius, Vilniaus miesto municipality, in the Nemuno river basin. Coordinates for the monitoring point: X=54.7235, Y=25.3126.

Facilities

One mobile dock, five changing cabins, rescue station with first aid equipment, beach loungers, parasols, hammocks, bicycle racks, drinking water fountain, grills, picnic tables (including accessible tables), small library, outdoor gym equipment, volleyball court, children's playground, information signs. Two showers, three toilet units. Waste management: ten 0.75 m³ waste bins emptied daily, 1.1 m³ mixed waste containers, and separate waste sorting containers.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Good quality in 2023–2024 (previously excellent quality from 2018–2022). The water body has medium ecological status and is classified as a risk group water body. Cyanobacteria blooms have not been detected. Faecal contamination incidents recorded on 2023-06-19, 2023-06-22, and 2024-06-19, exceeding permissible limits for E. coli and intestinal enterococci.

Risks

Possible short-term pollution during heavy rainfall due to stormwater discharge from combined sewer systems (outlets codes 130043 and 130017). Pollution sources: heat creating favourable conditions for algal growth and bacterial multiplication; rainfall washing faecal matter and debris into the water; high visitor numbers. Short-term pollution typically resolves within 1–2 days after rain ends.
