Zona Molo is a fairly extensive sandy beach in Alassio, Liguria, featuring a pedestrian pier perpendicular to the shoreline. The beach is part of a coastal water body classified as excellent quality for the 2018–2021 monitoring period. The area is located in an urbanised context with private beach facilities, accommodation structures, and numerous restaurants nearby.

Water

Coastal water body (CWA3 – mountain catchment with low stability). Part of the Laigueglia–Albenga water body. Bathing area extends 0.972 km. Sampling station located offshore.

Location

Alassio, province of Savona, Liguria, Italy. The beach is situated in the western part of Alassio town, with a seafront promenade, historic centre, and railway station nearby at higher elevation. Contact: Comune di Alassio, Piazza della Libertà 3, 17021 Alassio SV.

Water Quality

Classification for 2018–2021: Excellent. No coastal treatment plants are present within the bathing water. A sewage outfall pipe located approximately 300 m west of the sampling station discharges beyond the shoreline, outside the bathing water area.

Risks

During heavy rainfall or upstream flooding events, increased stream flow from Rio La Liggia may transport effluent downstream into the bathing water. The Rio La Liggia mouth is situated directly adjacent to the bathing water. Microalgae blooms of Ostreopsis ovata have occurred in the regional monitoring network (reference station MCAD at Pietra Ligure recorded exceedances of 30,000 cells/litre in August 2018, and values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in July–August 2018 and July 2021). Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary, reversible respiratory irritation and fever in sensitive individuals.
