Foce Rio Cardellino is a wide sandy beach in front of the town of Alassio in Liguria, Italy. The beach is situated in a mouth area formed by alluvial plains from river floods. The bathing water is classified as poor quality for the 2021-2024 four-year evaluation period. A sewage pipe located west of the monitoring point discharges into the sea approximately 285 meters from the beach. During heavy rainfall, increased torrent flow rates may transport sewage downstream into the bathing water.

Water

Coastal water body (CWA3 category: mountainous coastal waters with low stability). Bathing water extent: 0.341 km². Part of the Laigueglia-Albenga water body. Rio Cardellino watercourse mouth directly overlies the bathing water.

Location

Alassio, Savona Province, Liguria region, located east of the town center. The beach is fronted by the Grollero promenade, with the State Road SS1, the railway station, municipal buildings, a public garden, and a monastery located inland.

Private beach establishments with services, accommodation structures, and food and beverage activities.

Season

Monitoring season 2025 with intensified frequency. Profile review scheduled for 2027.

Water Quality

Classification: Poor (Scarso) for the 2021-2024 four-year period. Intensified monitoring frequency is in place for the 2025 season due to poor water classification. No treatment plants are present in the area. A sewage pipe located approximately 90 meters west of the sampling point discharges to the sea.

Risks

Sewage pipe discharge west of monitoring point. Potential for short-duration pollution events due to upstream critical conditions and heavy precipitation causing torrents to transport sewage downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has occurred in the region; reference station at Pietra Ligure recorded values between 10,000–30,000 cells/liter in July 2021, August 2022, and July 2023 and 2024 (below the 30,000 cells/liter threshold). Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals.
