A sandy beach with fine sand and a mean slope of 3% for both exposed and submerged areas, protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The distance between medium-low and high water (safe water limit) is approximately 80 metres. Astronomical tide ranges from 30 to 50 centimetres. The surrounding area is designated as a natural park.

Location

San Benedetto del Tronto, Ascoli Piceno Province, Marche Region, Italy. Located 100 metres north of the Bonifica Surgela Canal in the Port of San Benedetto del Tronto. Beach width averages 40 metres.

Water Quality

Classification not provided. Wastewater treatment is managed by a public mixed sewerage system connected to a biological treatment plant with activated sludge at Porto d'Ascoli, Via Brodolini 8. Design capacity is 180,000 Equivalent Inhabitants with current capacity of 100,000 Equivalent Inhabitants. The treatment plant demonstrated good efficiency in 2006 and 2007, with COD, BOD5 and suspended solids parameters always compliant. Microbiological monitoring in 2008, 2009 and 2010 was compliant. In August 2009, a Fibrocapsa japonica bloom was detected near the area at 2,436,000 cells/l with no reported health risk.

Risks

Short-duration pollution events caused by accidental pump station failures and overflow. Phytoplankton proliferation (Fibrocapsa japonica bloom detected August 2009).
