A sandy beach with a gentle slope of 3% extending from low to high water, protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The beach has a mean width of 50 metres, with approximately 80 metres between mean low water and the safe water limit. Tidal range is 30–50 cm. The surrounding area is densely urbanised with a railway line passing through.

Location

Beach establishment with refreshment point and sanitary facilities. Animals permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (poorest). The area is served by combined public sewerage connected to a treatment plant at Porto d'Ascoli with a design capacity of 180,000 population equivalents and current capacity of 100,000. The plant also handles industrial effluents equivalent to 40,000 inhabitants. Treatment plant showed good efficiency in 2006–2007 with COD, BOD5, and suspended solids parameters consistently compliant. Microbiological controls in 2008–2010 were compliant. In August 2009, a bloom of Fibrocapsa japonica was detected at 2,436,000 cells/litre with no reported health risk.

Risks

Short-duration pollution events including accidental failures and overflow from three pump stations (via del Passero, via Valtiberina–via Piave, via Martiri di Marzobotto–via dei Laureati). Fitoplankton proliferation, specifically Fibrocapsa japonica bloom in August 2009.
