A fine sand beach located 300 metres north of the Tronto river mouth in San Benedetto del Tronto, Marche region. The beach has a gentle average slope of 3% both above and below water, protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The beach is approximately 30 metres wide with a distance of about 80 metres between mean low and high water marks. The surrounding area is designated as a natural park.

River mouth of the Tronto river. Astronomical tidal range of 30–50 centimetres. Area extension 0.63882 hectares.

Location

San Benedetto del Tronto, Ascoli Piceno province, Marche region. The bathing water is located 300 metres north of the Tronto river mouth. Municipal offices at viale Alcide De Gasperi n. 124, CAP 63074.

Water Quality

Classification E. Wastewater treatment is provided by a mixed public sewer system connected to a treatment plant located in Porto d'Ascoli via Brodolini, 8. The plant is biological with activated sludge, designed capacity 180,000 inhabitants equivalent, current capacity 100,000 inhabitants equivalent. Industrial effluent equivalent to 40,000 inhabitants equivalent is also handled. COD, BOD5, and suspended solids parameters were consistently compliant in 2006 and 2007. Microbiological monitoring from 2008, 2009, and 2010 showed compliance. E. coli monitoring is conducted at the river mouth.

Risks

Potential short-term pollution events from accidental failures, overflow from treatment plant, overflow structures, and pump stations. No cyanobacterial proliferation reported. No macroalgae, phytoplankton, or potentially toxic species proliferation reported.
