Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Cinque Arcate is a bathing beach on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore in Castelveccana, Lombardia. The beach is pebbly with rocky sections and has free but somewhat difficult access. It is situated a few kilometres from the town centre of Castelveccana and from Laveno Mombello. The beach has a width of 15 metres and is situated at an altitude of 203 metres above sea level.

Water

Lake Maggiore. The bathing area extends 0.120 km². The water body is part of the Ticino River basin.

Location

Located on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore in Castelveccana, Lombardia, a few kilometres from the town centre of Castelveccana and from Laveno Mombello. Parking is available in the area along with a refreshment point and a drinking water fountain.

Parking, refreshment point, drinking water fountain. Animals are permitted in the area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is Excellent for the reference period 2019–2022. Monitoring is conducted by the Pallanza buoy (CNR and ARPA) to detect pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, intestinal Enterococci, and cyanobacteria. The wastewater treatment plant serving Castelveccana respects regulatory discharge limits. The SIMILE project monitors and manages the lake with citizen participation.

Risks

Possible critical conditions from unfavourable meteorological events such as severe weather. Potential short-duration pollution events from anomalous atmospheric events, stagnation, and spills of various kinds. Possible accidental or unauthorised discharges of wastewater or contaminating debris. Cyanobacteria are identified as potentially toxic species within the phytoplankton component.
