A beach located 500 metres south of the Tenna River mouth in Fermo, Marche region. The beach consists of gravel and sand with a gentle 3% slope on both the emerged and submerged portions. It is protected by artificial breakwaters. The distance between mean low water and safe water limits is approximately 80 metres. Astronomical tidal range is 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area is urbanised with a railway line passing through.

Location

Fermo, Marche province, Italy. Located 500 metres south of the Tenna River mouth. The competent authority is the Municipality of Fermo, Via Mazzini 4, 63023 Fermo.

Facilities

Beach establishment with refreshment point and toilet facilities. Lookout tower for lifeguard and sea rescue operations. Pedestrian and cycling path. Dogs are permitted in beach concessions according to municipal regulations.

Water Quality

Classification: 2015 Good; 2016–2018 Sufficient. 2015: E. coli 95th percentile 373.8 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 179.2 CFU/100ml. 2016: E. coli 90th percentile 370.0 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 90th percentile 148.5 CFU/100ml. 2017: E. coli 90th percentile 252.7 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 105.5 CFU/100ml. 2018: E. coli 90th percentile 320.1 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 95th percentile 156.5 CFU/100ml. Wastewater treatment: The area is served by a combined public sewer connected to a treatment plant with a lifting station and overflows. The plant is a biological activated sludge facility with a design capacity of 50,000 population equivalents, serving most of Fermo. COD, BOD5, and suspended solids parameters were compliant in 2011–2014. Microbiological monitoring during 2011–2014 was compliant. Anomalous contamination events occurred in 2015 and 2018.

Risks

The bathing area is at risk due to proximity to the Tenna River mouth, located 500 metres north. Short-duration contamination events have been identified with the Tenna mouth as the pollution source. Anomalous contamination of longer duration occurred in 2015 and 2018.
