A beach located 200 metres north of the Tenna River mouth in Porto Sant'Elpidio, featuring gravel and sand with a 3% average slope. The beach is protected by artificial submerged and emergent breakwaters, with an average width of 20 metres and a distance of approximately 80 metres between mean low and high water lines. The surrounding area is densely urbanised with a railway line passing through.

Water

Adriatic Sea. The water body is classified as Civitanova_Porto San Giorgio. Astronomical tidal range is 30–50 centimetres. Mean beach slope is 3% for both emerged and submerged portions.

Location

Porto Sant'Elpidio, Fermo Province, Marche Region, Italy. The bathing area is situated approximately 200 metres north of the Tenna River mouth and approximately 750 metres south of the river mouth itself. Access is available from nearby urban areas including private areas with direct beach access.

Facilities

Beach establishment with refreshment point and sanitary facilities. One concession area with tourist-recreational equipment, lifeguard assistance, and first aid services. Free beach areas are also available. Private access areas with direct beach access exist. Dogs are prohibited on the free beach but permitted on the concession beach at the concessionaire's discretion.

Water Quality

Classification in 2015: unclassifiable; 2016: Sufficient; 2017: Good; 2018: Good. In 2016, Escherichia coli 90th percentile was 226.6 CFU/100 ml and intestinal enterococci 90th percentile was 68.8 CFU/100 ml. In 2017, E. coli 95th percentile was 338.0 CFU/100 ml and intestinal enterococci 95th percentile was 89.3 CFU/100 ml. In 2018, E. coli 95th percentile was 415.8 CFU/100 ml and intestinal enterococci 90th percentile was 164.6 CFU/100 ml. The area is served by a combined public sewer system connected to a wastewater treatment plant with activated sludge technology, designed for 48,000 population equivalents. During 2008–2010, the treatment plant demonstrated good efficiency and microbiological controls were compliant. Monitoring of E. coli at the river mouth in 2013 showed ranges of 240–20,000 CFU/100 ml and in 2014 showed 90–1,300 CFU/100 ml.

Risks

The bathing area is at risk due to proximity to the Tenna River mouth, located 750 metres to the south. An emergent breakwater perpendicular to the coast is positioned approximately 200 metres south of the monitoring station, providing mitigation. An overflow outlet is present approximately 100 metres south of the station. Short-duration pollution events occur due to treatment plant malfunctions and heavy rainfall. Anomalous contamination events of extended duration were recorded in 2016 (1 event) and 2018 (1 event). No cyanobacteria blooms were detected during the sampling period. No macroalgae, phytoplankton, or potentially toxic species blooms were reported in the last four years.
