A bathing beach located 750 metres north of the Tenna river mouth in Porto Sant'Elpidio, Marche region. The beach consists of gravel and sand with a 3% average slope, protected by artificial radial breakwaters. The distance between medium-low and high water levels is approximately 80 metres, with astronomical tides of 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area is densely urbanized with a railway line passing through. The beach is 20 metres wide on average.

Water

Marine bathing area on the Adriatic coast. The water body is identified as Civitanova_Porto San Giorgio. The sandy and gravelly beach has a 3% slope in both the emerged and submerged zones. Astronomical tide range is 30–50 centimetres. The distance between medium-low and high water levels (safe water limit) is approximately 80 metres. A submerged breakwater and an emergent breakwater-groyne perpendicular to the coastline were recently constructed approximately 200 metres south of the monitoring station.

Location

Porto Sant'Elpidio, Fermo Province, Marche region. The bathing area is located 750 metres north of the Tenna river mouth. The competent authority is the Municipality of Porto Sant'Elpidio, Via Umberto I° 485, 63821.

Facilities

Beach establishment with refreshment point and sanitary facilities. Animals are permitted access to the area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Category E. The area is served by a mixed public sewer system connected to a treatment plant. The treatment plant is located on Via Mazzini n. 372 in Faleriense locality, Porto Sant'Elpidio municipality, serving Porto Sant'Elpidio, Monte Urano, and Sant'Elpidio a Mare. The plant is a biological activated sludge system with a design capacity of 48,000 equivalent inhabitants. Currently 33,000 equivalent inhabitants are treated during winter and 38,000 during summer. The receiving water body is the Tenna river. During 2008, 2009, and 2010, the treatment plant demonstrated good efficiency and microbiological controls were compliant. E. coli monitoring is conducted at the river mouth monitoring station.

Risks

The bathing point is at risk due to proximity to the Tenna river mouth 750 metres to the south, a risk mitigated by the presence of a perpendicular groyne approximately 400 metres south of the monitoring point. Overflow structures are present. Short-duration pollution events from accidental failures and overflows from sewer relief systems are identified as potential sources. No cyanobacterial proliferation reported. No macroalgae, phytoplankton, or potentially toxic species proliferation reported.
