A pebble and sand beach with a medium slope of 3% on both the emerged and submerged areas, protected by artificial breakwaters. The distance between mean low and high water (safe water limit) is approximately 80 metres. The beach has an average width of 30 metres and is located in an urbanised area with semi-natural and agricultural environments nearby.

Water

Fosso della Torre, part of the Porto San Giorgio_Grottammare water body. The Ete Vivo river basin is the hydrographic context. Tidal range: 30–50 centimetres. Distance between mean low and high water: approximately 80 metres.

Location

Porto San Giorgio_Grottammare area, Fermo province, Marche region, Italy. The competent authority is the Municipality of Fermo, Via Mazzini 4, 63023 Fermo.

Facilities

Beach establishment (stabilimento balneare) with refreshment point and sanitary facilities. Animals are permitted on the beach.

Water Quality

Classification: E (poor quality). The area is served by a mixed public sewer connected to a treatment plant with a biological activated sludge system designed for 40,000 equivalent inhabitants. Discharges consist of urban wastewater including domestic and industrial effluent. Microbiological monitoring in 2008 and 2010 was compliant. One of two controls in 2009 (28 August) was non-compliant for E. Coli at 120,000 CFU/100 ml due to damage to the inlet pipe of the treatment plant. COD, BOD5, and suspended solids parameters were consistently compliant in 2006 and 2007.

Risks

An overflow device (scolmatore) located on Via Poldo e Lidia has been identified as a pollution source during brief overflow events. No cyanobacterial proliferation or macroalgae/phytoplankton proliferation has been reported.
