A pebbly beach located along the SS.16 road near Foce in Rocca San Giovanni, Abruzzo. The beach is approximately 12 metres wide and is protected from strong storms by groynes. The bathing water has been classified as poor quality. Behind the beach lies a disused railway line.

Coastal waters. The bathing area extends 0.8 kilometres along the coast.

Location

Rocca San Giovanni, Chieti Province, Abruzzo. Located at approximately km 484.625 on the SS.16 road at Foce. A public parking area and private campground are available. A wheelchair-accessible ramp is present.

Facilities

Public parking, private campground, wheelchair-accessible ramp, toilets. Animals are prohibited under regional ordinance.

Water Quality

Bathing water classification: poor quality. The marine waters have shown scarce algal blooms during summer periods. In September 2018, a high bloom of Ostreopsis ovata was recorded, reaching over one million cells per litre near the Fosso San Biagio outlet. No wastewater treatment plants, sea outfalls, or Imhoff systems are present in the beach area; only a lifting pump is located approximately 200 metres upstream. No discharges of treated wastewater or offshore discharges occur.

Risks

Proliferation of dinoflagellates, particularly Ostreopsis ovata, a potentially toxic microalga species. In September 2018, this alga caused cases of respiratory difficulty and dyspnoea. The microalga can be toxic via inhalation of aerosol when present on the beach.
