Agios Ermogenis

Cyprus Coastal 1 - Excellent

Agios Hermogenis is an extensive sandy beach with sections covered by pebbles, located in the Episkopeio Bay area of Cyprus. The beach features dining facilities along its length and shrubby vegetation with a small number of palm trees. The shoreline is a natural sandy zone with a sandy seabed composition. Water sports activities take place in the area, and the beach accommodates approximately 1,200 swimmers daily.

Water

Coastal marine water body named Episkopeio Bay – Eastern section. Beach length is 1,100 metres. Average water depth is 2 metres with a maximum depth of 3.5 metres. The seabed in the shoreline zone is sandy in grain composition.

Location

Located in the Episkopeio community, Limassol district, Cyprus. The monitoring point is positioned at coordinates 32.8819 E, 34.6622 N (ETRS89) at the location where the largest volume of swimmers congregates. The beach is publicly managed and falls within a British military base area.

Facilities

A lifeguard and lifesaving equipment are present. Waste collection bins are maintained by the Episkopeio Community Council. Toilets are available at dining facilities. No public facilities specifically dedicated to swimmers exist.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data. The coastal water body is in good ecological status. One isolated pollution incident was recorded on 21 September 2005 during the 2005 bathing season. Some pollution incidents have possibly been attributed to animals. No short-term pollution incidents were recorded during the 2008-2010 bathing seasons.

Risks

Low risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton eutrophication development. Small risk of short-term pollution from malfunction of wastewater systems in coastal developments, estimated to occur once per bathing season lasting 1-2 days. Possible pollution sources include vessel passage near the beach approaching the Episkopeio fishing shelter located approximately 2 kilometres west of the beach.
