Agios Efstathios is a rocky natural beach with a short coastline covered entirely by beachrock formations. The beach is located within the Natura 2000 SPA network (code CY3000005, Agia Thekla–Liópetri). The shoreline is bordered by a dirt path, with residential houses and some agricultural fields in the interior section. Natural vegetation consists mainly of low shrubs and saltbush near the coastline. The water body belongs to the Akrotiri Pyla–Aqua Farm coastal area and has a good ecological status.

Water

Coastal water body. Average water depth: 0.8 meters. Maximum water depth: 2 meters. The seabed is covered entirely by beachrock formations with negligible vegetation. Drainage basin: Cyprus (code CY001). Hydrological basin 7 with average surface rainfall of 350 mm. Southwestern winds prevail during the swimming season.

Location

Located in Ammochostos (Famagusta) district, in the community of Sotiras, Cyprus. The beach is 90 meters long. Coordinates: 33.9100E, 34.9739N (ETRS89). Monitoring point is at the beach centre where the largest concentration of swimmers is found. Maximum daily swimmers: 150.

Facilities

No public service infrastructure or waste collection bins are available.

Season

Monitoring reports and quality assessments conducted since Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004 under Directive 76/160/EEC.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data. The coastal water body is in good ecological condition. During 2004–2007 monitoring, nitrate and chlorophyll-a concentrations were below 2 mg/l and 2 μg/l respectively. No eutrophication was recorded during this period. Isolated pollution incidents occurred during swimming seasons 2005 and 2007. One short-term pollution event was recorded between 2008–2010 (15 July 2008).

Risks

Moderate risk of macroalgae (Cladophora spp) and phytoplankton development. Risk of short-term pollution is low. Potential pollution sources: agricultural runoff and infiltration (area is in a nitrate-vulnerable zone); urban wastewater from septic tanks of holiday home complexes; Liópetri fishing harbour located 800 m southwest; fish farming operations 2.6 km southwest.
