Alberssee/Südstrand is an artificial lake located in the Lippstadt area of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The bathing area has a sandy beach section approximately 200 metres long. The lake has been designated as a bathing water site since 1996. Water quality has been rated as excellent for four consecutive years (2020–2023). The lake covers 2.35 hectares with an average depth of 4 metres and maximum depth of 8 metres.

Water

Artificial lake covering 2.35 hectares. Average depth 4 metres, maximum depth 8 metres. Water temperature ranges from 16.9°C to 25.2°C (mean 20.08°C). pH values range from 7.89 to 8.55 (mean 8.27). Water transparency ranges from 1.6 to 2 metres (mean 1.75 metres). Water exchange time exceeds 30 days. Substrate is sandy and silty. The catchment area is very small (less than 10 square kilometres). Lake elevation is in lowland areas (below 200 metres above sea level).

Water Quality

Bathing water quality classified as excellent in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. No relevant pollution sources have been identified. Septic tank systems present but with no relevant influence on water quality. Sand and gravel extraction operations present but with no relevant influence. Drainage water from agricultural land present but with no relevant influence.

Risks

Cyanobacteria bloom observed in 2022, resulting in a swimming ban from 18 August to 7 September 2022. Cercariae (waterfowl parasites causing swimmer's itch) present in rare cases. Low macroalgae burden. Low to moderate future risk of phytoplankton mass development. Bird presence occasionally affects the water.
