Amager Sydstrand is a bathing beach located along the southern part of Dragør, approximately 1500 metres long with a sandy bottom. The beach consists of a sandy area approximately 5 metres wide. The water is classified as Excellent quality based on annual statistical analysis of bathing water samples collected during the official bathing season from 1 June to 1 September.

Location

Located along the southern part of Dragør. Access via Søndre Strandvej with parking available at Sylten.

Season

Official bathing season: 1 June to 1 September. Water quality monitoring occurs during this period.

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent quality. Water quality is monitored at least 10 times during the bathing season (1 June to 1 September), exceeding the bathing water directive minimum requirement of 4 samples per season. Classification is determined annually after the bathing season ends based on statistical analysis of data from the current and previous three years.

Risks

Cyanobacteria blooms may occur, particularly after rainy periods followed by warm weather, causing discoloured water, foam, and potentially dead animals. Cyanobacterial toxins can cause headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Large amounts of macroalgae (seaweed) may accumulate at the water's edge; bathing is not recommended near large accumulations due to toxin production in decomposing seaweed and protection of disease-causing bacteria from UV rays. Manual discharge of diluted wastewater from pumping station P22 may occur during heavy rainfall or cloudbursts, typically 0-1 times per year, causing temporary pollution lasting at most 3 days. Glass fragments, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally occur.
