Ancienne Auberge is a bathing beach located in Hyères, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southern France. The beach comprises sand and small pebbles, stretches 100 metres in length and 20 to 25 metres in width, and is oriented southwest. It experiences low visitor frequency and is used primarily for swimming.

Water

Open configuration bathing area with a watershed basin of 0.8 km². Located south of the L'Almanarre district, approximately 1.5 kilometres from the wastewater treatment plant outfall which is submerged between 10 and 20 metres depth.

Location

Hyères, Var department, southern France. Coordinates N 43°04'55.4" - E 6°07'03.0". Accessible by the L'Almanarre road. Parking available on the upper beach. Not accessible for disabled visitors.

Facilities

Parking on upper beach. Waste bins on upper beach. No lifeguard post. No showers, toilets, or drinking water point. No disabled access or equipped facilities for disabled users. No animals allowed. No restaurant.

Water Quality

Water quality classification in 2022: Excellent according to Directive 2006/7/CE. No microbiological pollution recorded in 2019. Preventive closures occurred in 2020, 2021, and 2022 due to adverse weather conditions. A single microbiological contamination event was recorded on 13 July 2021 with 600 intestinal enterococci detected; the pollution source was not identified but the situation returned to normal. No chemical or biological pollution has been recorded.

Risks

Potential sewage discharge from the Hyères-Carqueiranne wastewater treatment plant located less than 1 kilometre away. Risk of untreated wastewater discharge in case of treatment plant malfunction. Potential pollution flows from forced pressure relief posts and sewerage network in case of pump failure or power cut. A blue shark was sighted near the beach on 29 July 2022, resulting in a temporary closure order.
