Angeiras Sul is an urban beach located in Matosinhos with a small sand strip and many rocky outcrops. The beach is strongly eroded. It is situated in the Leça river basin and monitored at coordinates 41.261460°N, 8.726025°W.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling is conducted every 2 weeks. Short-term pollution events lasting less than 72 hours are likely, potentially caused by excessive flow from the tributary river during rainfall or untreated effluent discharges from the Angeiras wastewater pumping station. No bathing restrictions were imposed during the 2024 bathing season. Potential microbiological pollution sources include faecal contamination from the local wastewater drainage network and from the Onda river and ribeira da Certagem tributaries.

Risks

Short-term pollution events are likely due to excessive river flow during rainfall and potential untreated effluent discharges. Cyanobacteria blooms have a moderate proliferation potential with historical occurrence. Phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no history of occurrence. Macroalgae proliferation potential is low with no history of occurrence.
