Funtão is a non-urban beach with an extensive sand strip characterized by a slope in the bathing area. The beach is located in the Leça river basin. It is subject to official monitoring and bathing season restrictions.

Matosinhos municipality. Monitoring point coordinates: Latitude 41.256877°, Longitude -8.724189°.

Season

14 June to 14 September 2025. Sampling frequency: every 3 weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). No days of bathing prohibition or disadvice due to short-term pollution occurred during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution events are likely, potentially caused by excessive flow from tributary rivers during precipitation carrying microbiological load, or from untreated effluent discharges in case of breakdown of the Angeiras wastewater pumping station. Faecal contamination may originate from the local wastewater drainage network and from the Onda river and Ribeira da Certagem, which empty near the bathing water. Cyanobacteria have a moderate proliferation potential with historical occurrence of blooms. Phytoplankton and macroalgae have low proliferation potential with no historical occurrence.
