Araba Fenice is a bathing water area on Lake Sirio in the Piedmont region near Chiaverano. Lake Sirio, a lake water body. The bathing area extension is 0.065 km² and is situated at 266 metres above sea level. The catchment basin is characterised by surrounding hills with limited urban development.

Location

Located in Chiaverano, Turin Province, Piedmont region. The competent authority is the Municipality of Chiaverano, Piazza Ombre 1, 10010, telephone 0125 54805. The bathing area covers 0.065 km² at an altitude of 266 metres above sea level.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent. Based on 18 routine samples from 2020–2023. Escherichia coli 90th percentile: 35.5 MPN/100 ml, 95th percentile: 59.4 MPN/100 ml. Enterococci 90th percentile: 85.7 MPN/100 ml, 95th percentile: 145.2 MPN/100 ml. The bathing water falls within the homogeneous zone Sirio 2 with a medium-low impact indicator determined by wastewater class III. The lake has no authorised direct discharges, though small unauthorised discharges from individual buildings via tributaries cannot be excluded.

Risks

Cyanobacterial bloom risk due to strong eutrophication of lake waters. Of 29 cyanobacterial samples analysed over the past four years, 15 recorded density equal to or greater than 20,000 cells/ml. No toxic effects have been reported. Phytoplankton proliferations other than cyanobacteria are normal in the lake but pose no toxicity concerns. Short-duration pollution events can occur due to malfunction of wastewater pumping stations, specifically pump failures triggering emergency overflow or blockage of sewage pipes with backflow from inspection chambers.
