Askø Strand is a family-friendly bathing beach located on the east coast of Askø in the Smålandsfarvandet strait. The beach is 130 metres long and 5 metres wide, consisting of fine sand with few stones. A large green area provides space for sunbathing and recreation, and a bathing platform is erected during the bathing season. The beach is situated in front of a small dike below a large summer house area.

Water

Smålandsfarvandet strait, classified as brackish water. Water depth increases gradually from the shore and remains under 2 metres at 400 metres from the coast. Current direction is variable with no dominant flow.

Location

Askø, east coast of Askø. The beach is accessed via Konemadevej, with parking available along the roadside.

Facilities

Bathing platform (erected during bathing season), rubbish bins, parking, lifeguard rescue equipment.

Season

Routine water quality monitoring is conducted during the official bathing season. Classification is revised annually before the bathing season begins.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent for 2022, based on routine monitoring during the bathing season 2018–2021. Monitoring detects E. coli and enterococci bacteria as faecal contamination indicators. The municipality has identified no known sources of faecal pollution that pose a risk to bathing water quality.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms and phytoplankton is low but present. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) washup. Glass fragments and litter may occur. Risk of chemical pollution is very low. Potential for sudden contamination from boat accidents, manure tankers, or sewer lines.
