Aterro is a non-urban beach (Type II) located in the Leça river basin with a small sand strip and many rocky outcrops. The beach is strongly eroded. It is situated in Matosinhos municipality on the Portuguese coast.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling frequency is every 2 weeks. No days of bathing advisories or prohibitions due to short-term pollution were recorded during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive stream flow during rainfall events, leading to microbiological contamination. Untreated effluent discharges may occur due to malfunctions in the wastewater pumping station or rupture of GALP's refinery emissary. Faecal contamination may originate from rainwater drainage networks, GALP's refinery emissary networks, and from Ribeira da Boa Nova stream which empties near the bathing water. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with a history of bloom occurrences. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no history of occurrences.
