Leça da Palmeira is an urban beach in Matosinhos with an extensive sandy strip interrupted by rocky clusters. The bathing water is monitored fortnightly and has not experienced any days of advised-against or prohibited bathing due to short-term pollution events during the 2024 season.

Season

June 14 to September 14, 2025. Fortnightly sampling frequency.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). No bathing advisories or prohibitions were issued in 2024 due to short-term pollution. Potential microbiological pollution sources include faecal contamination from rainwater networks, the Ribeiro do Sardoal tributary, the Leça river, malfunctions in wastewater pumping stations, and nearby vessel traffic.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive surface flow from tributaries during rainfall, contamination of rainwater and sewerage networks, or proximity to Leixões harbor (fishing boats and cargo/passenger ships). Cyanobacteria have a moderate proliferation potential with historical occurrence of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no historical occurrence.
