Avencas is a beach dominated by cliffs with significant landscape features of great interest. The rocky platforms and sandy area were designated as a Zone of Biophysical Interest in 1998 and reclassified as a Marine Protected Area in 2016. The beach is characterized by high ecological importance.

Cascais municipality. Coordinates: latitude 38.687746°, longitude -9.359926° (ETRS89).

Season

May 1st to October 15th, 2024. Weekly sampling frequency.

Water Quality

Water quality classification 2023 under Decreto-Lei 135/09. Contamination may originate from surface water drainage network (1 discharge point) and sewerage network failure. Contamination risk is low based on historical data. No bathing restrictions were imposed due to short-term pollution events during the 2023 bathing season.

Risks

Potential for short-term pollution events (lasting 1-2 days) may occur due to excessive rainfall or sewerage network failure. Cyanobacteria, macroalgae, and phytoplankton proliferation are unlikely.
