Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Avnsø is a freshwater lake located in a scenic forest landscape in Lejre Municipality, Denmark. The bathing area is 5–10 metres wide and 50 metres long, marked with a blue line on the shore. Water depth increases gradually from the shore, making it attractive for families with children. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 8 metres at its deepest point. Bathers should be aware that thermoclines with large temperature differences between water layers can occur.

Water

Avnsø is a freshwater lake. The shore consists of a mixture of soil and coarse sand, with grass overgrowth in some places. The lake bed is composed of sand with small and medium-sized stones scattered evenly. Water depth increases gradually from the shore to a maximum depth of 8 metres. Current direction is variable and primarily comes from the west.

Location

Avnsø is located in Lejre Municipality. Access is via Tjørnehusvej, which leads to a car park from which further driving into the forest is not permitted. Paths lead from the car park to the bathing beach. Parking is available at the designated car park.

Facilities

The bathing beach has a warning sign for deteriorated water quality, parking available, and a waste bin at the marked control point.

Season

Routine water quality monitoring is conducted during the bathing season. Water quality classification is revised annually in May before the bathing season begins.

Water Quality

The bathing water at Avnsø is classified as Excellent quality based on routine monitoring of indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) during the bathing season. Classification is based on control samples from the four preceding bathing seasons. No known sources of faecal pollution have been identified in the area.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) wash-up in the shoreline is low. Risk of chemical pollution is very low. Glass shards, litter, and similar debris may occasionally occur. Thermoclines can occur in the lake. Sudden pollution from unknown sources is possible.
