Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Hvidsø is a bathing lake located in Jystrup near Skjoldnæsholmsvej in Ringsted Municipality, Denmark. The beach is a defined area on forest ground approximately 15 metres wide with a total area of about 45 square metres. Access to the bathing area is via a 400-metre walking path along the lake shore. The lake has a natural lake bed with water depth under 1 metre for the first 20 metres, between 1–2 metres for the next 20 metres, then gradually increasing to between 2 and 5 metres.

Water

Freshwater lake with natural lake bed. Beach area approximately 45 square metres, approximately 15 metres wide. Water depth under 1 metre for the first 20 metres, 1–2 metres for the next 20 metres, then gradually increasing to 2–5 metres. Generally very low current, with dominant flow directions from the east (39% of measurements) and from the north (21% of measurements).

Location

Hvidsø is located in Jystrup near Skjoldnæsholmsvej in Ringsted Municipality, Denmark. Access is via a 400-metre walking path along the lake shore. Parking is available at sports facilities on the opposite side of Skjoldnæsholmsvej or at Søholmskolen, 100 metres from the bathing area access path.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Based on data from 2010–2013, the 95-percentile for intestinal enterococci is 46 cfu/100 mL and for Escherichia coli is 42.35 cfu/100 mL. Slightly elevated values for enterococci and E. coli were detected in 2 of 42 samples over four years, but remained within excellent quality thresholds. No registered sources of faecal pollution affecting water quality.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is very low. Blooms have occurred twice in the last 20 years, typically in late July or August during prolonged warm periods with nutrients in the water. Algae can produce toxic substances causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. No risk of macroalgae washing ashore. No registered sources of short-term pollution.
