Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Kimmerslev Lake is a 37-hectare lake located near the village of Borup, 14 km west of Køge in Denmark. The lake was originally created as a mill pond for Kimmerslev Mill and now serves to collect winter runoff and maintain water flow in Køge River during summer. A sandy beach approximately 10 by 20 meters is located in the northwestern corner of the lake, with the northern end reserved for swimmers. The lake bottom consists primarily of clay, and the maximum depth reaches 6.8 meters.

Water

A freshwater lake of approximately 37 hectares. Maximum depth is 6.8 meters. Water level drops approximately 1.2 meters from the start to the end of the bathing season. The lake bottom consists primarily of clay soil. Water outflows at Slusevej to Kimmerslev Mill Stream and further to Køge River.

Location

The lake is situated east of Borup, 14 km west of Køge. The nearest parking area is at Kimmerslev vej 9, approximately 430 meters from the lake, accessed via footpath and green areas.

Facilities

Trash bins, rescue post, benches, information board. The rescue post is inspected annually before the bathing season begins and weekly during the season.

Season

Official monitoring period is 1 May to 1 September.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as Excellent quality based on data from 2007–2010 (E. coli) and 2008–2010 (enterococci). Water samples are taken at least 4 times between 1 May and 1 September. The lake has poor ecological status due to high chlorophyll content; nutrient input, especially phosphorus, must be reduced. Risk of significant fecal pollution (>2000 E. coli per 100 ml) is low.

Risks

After heavy rainfall, overflow from the wastewater system may occur, introducing E. coli bacteria. Bathing is not recommended for 4–5 days following heavy rainfall. Risk of cyanobacteria and phytoplankton blooms exists due to relatively high nutrient content, particularly during warm weather following rainy periods. Municipal observations from 2007–2010 indicate low risk of severe algal blooms. Sudden pollution from oil tanks, manure tanks, or sewage pipes is possible. Contamination of the beach with debris such as glass shards may occur.
