Badestelle Hattsteinweiher

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Hattsteinweiher is the only bathing lake in the Taunus region, located northwest of Usingen in woodland. The lake was formed approximately 90 years ago through the construction of an earth dam and is fed by a small stream. The eastern shore is designated for swimming and includes a separate non-swimmer area. Access to the water is via a sandy beach adjacent to the meadow.

Water

Weiher (pond/small lake) with a water surface area of 1.6 hectares. Maximum depth is 4.0 metres, mean depth is 2.1 metres. Fed by a small stream. The shallow depth prevents stable temperature stratification in summer, causing the entire water mass to warm significantly.

Location

Located northwest of Usingen. Access via B275 from Usingen in the direction of Weilrod/Bad Schwalbach, turning north shortly after leaving Usingen town limits following signage.

Facilities

Sandy beach (65 metres long), adjacent large meadow, two wooden piers, toilets, outdoor showers, restaurant, separated non-swimmer area.

Season

1 May to 31 August.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent quality (2021–2025). Tested before each season and at least monthly during season for indicator bacteria (Enterococci and Escherichia coli). Medium risk of future cyanobacteria blooms based on eutrophic trophic status. Medium observed frequency of cyanobacteria blooms during swimming season. No known pollution sources from wastewater, combined sewer, or stormwater discharge.

Risks

Elevated cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) development during summer months due to high nutrient levels. Cyanobacteria can produce substances harmful to swimmers, causing skin irritation or allergic reactions. Shallow depth allows nutrient release from sediment under certain conditions.
