Licher Waldschwimmbad

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Licher Waldschwimmbad is a small pond situated in woodland on the northern outskirts of Lich, southeast of Giessen. It forms part of a chain of shallow reservoir ponds and is the middle pond in this series. The water is somewhat turbid due to sediment on the lake floor. A 6000 m² section of its 4.0 hectare water surface is designated as a swimming area.

Water

Pond (Weiher). Area: 4.0 hectares. Maximum depth: 2.78 metres at the diving tower. Average depth: 1.52 metres. Part of a shallow reservoir pond chain.

Location

Located north of Lich, southeast of Giessen. Access is at the southeastern shore near the dam on Alte-Gießener-Straße. From B457 towards Giessen or the motorway, turn briefly onto B448 towards Lich, then right onto Alte-Gießener-Straße. Parking is available near the bathing area. Entry to the water is exclusively via stairs and ladders.

Facilities

Three separate non-swimmer concrete pools separated from the swimmer area by fencing. Diving tower and water slide on the dam. Sun terrace approximately 70 metres long. Sun terrace section at non-swimmer pool approximately 30 metres long. Lying meadow approximately 350 metres long. Showers, changing rooms, and toilets available. Kiosk. Daily average attendance approximately 50 bathers; approximately 400 bathers on warm weekends.

15 May 2026 to 23 August 2026

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality for 2021–2025. Water quality is monitored twice before the season begins and at least monthly during the season. Testing focuses on Enterococci and Escherichia coli as indicator organisms. The trophic classification is polytroph 1, indicating high nutrient loading and a high risk of future cyanobacterial blooms. High observed cyanobacterial blooms have been recorded during the bathing season.

Risks

Potential hygiene risk from direct inflow of the Ahlbach stream, which carries municipal wastewater and mixed water discharges. Nutrient loading from an upstream pond. High nutrient loading can cause high algae and cyanobacterial blooms during summer months. Cyanobacterial blooms (Blaualgen/water bloom) can produce toxins causing allergic reactions and skin irritation in bathers. Trophic classification indicates high future risk of cyanobacterial mass development.
