Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Schultheis-Weiher is a former gravel pit lake located northeast of Offenbach in a Main river bend between the districts of Bürgel and Rumpenheim. The excavation occurred from 1928 to the 1960s, and bathing has been permitted since 1986. The lake covers 10.4 hectares with a maximum depth of 3.11 metres and average depth of 2.49 metres. The shallow depth means the entire water mass warms quickly in summer without stable temperature stratification. A sandy beach approximately 100 metres long with adjacent meadow is located at the southwestern corner.

Location

Located northeast of Offenbach am Main, Germany, between the districts of Bürgel and Rumpenheim in a Main river bend. Access is by bicycle and footpaths from Offenbach, Bürgel, and Rumpenheim directions.

Facilities

Approximately 100 metre sand beach with adjacent meadow featuring scattered shade trees. Well-signposted toilets, some wheelchair-accessible. External showers. Separated naturist (FKK) and textile bathing areas totalling approximately 260 metres in length with approximately 50 metres depth. Average daily visitor numbers 500 to 1000.

Season

1 May 2026 to 15 September 2026. Prior to season start and at least monthly during season, monitoring occurs.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality for 2021–2025. Monitored for enterococci and Escherichia coli indicator bacteria. Sampling occurs twice before the season and at least monthly during the season. Visibility depth ranges from 30 to over 200 centimetres. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) mass blooms have been observed frequently mid-to-late season, posing potential health risks including allergic reactions and skin irritation. No known hygiene threats from wastewater, mixed water, or stormwater discharge. Potential contamination from waterfowl in adjacent nature and bird protection areas. A phosphate elimination system has been operational since 2021 to reduce nutrient loading.

Risks

High frequency of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) mass blooms during summer. Cyanobacteria can produce substances harmful to swimmers, causing allergic reactions and skin irritation. Potential contamination from waterfowl. Visitors are advised not to feed waterfowl. Visibility depth decreases as summer progresses.
