Trais-Horloffer See is a former brown coal mining pit located south of Hungen and 40 km north of Frankfurt, between the districts of Inheiden and Trais-Horloff. The lake became a recreation and weekend area starting in the early 1960s and is the northernmost of the former brown coal pits in the Wetterau lake region. The lake is popular with water sports enthusiasts and serves as a performance centre for Hessian sailors. The main bathing area features a 500 m long meadow on the northeastern shore in Inheiden, with shallow entry that drops off quickly.

Water

Former brown coal mining pit (tagebausee). Water surface area: 35.1 hectares. Maximum depth: 27.2 metres. Mean depth: 10.4 metres. Elevation: 128 metres above sea level. Summer thermal stratification occurs due to depth, which positively affects water quality.

Location

Located south of Hungen and 40 km north of Frankfurt, between the districts of Inheiden and Trais-Horloff. Access from road B489 heading east through Inheiden. The main bathing area is on the northeastern shore in Inheiden. Parking is paid but abundantly available near the access road and meadow.

Facilities

Toilets near the meadow and at the parking area. Two kiosks directly at the lake on the Inheiden side. Lying meadows and nature paths around the lake for recreation. Paid parking available.

Season

01 June 2026 to 31 August 2026. The lake has no official bathing season closure currently in effect. Pre-season testing occurs before the bathing season begins; monthly sampling occurs during the season.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality (ausgezeichnete Qualität) consistently from 2021 to 2025. Monitoring includes enterococci and Escherichia coli bacteria measurements. No known wastewater, stormwater, or surface runoff pollution sources. Nutrient loading is low and cyanobacteria development is minimal. Risk of short-term cyanobacteria blooms exists despite low overall loading. No management measures currently required for hygiene water quality.

Short-term cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms not excluded despite low loading. Risk of future cyanobacteria mass occurrence rated as very low. Observed cyanobacteria mass occurrence during bathing season rated as low.
