Walldorfer See is a 17.3-hectare quarry lake located approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Frankfurt in the Dreieichforst forest area, between the BAB 5 motorway and B 44 federal road. The lake has a maximum depth of 14.1 meters and an average depth of 5 meters, with stable temperature stratification during summer that supports good water quality. Strong underwater plant growth (macrophytes) develops in summer, which inhibits algae and cyanobacteria growth and promotes clear water. The western shore is closed for bathing due to hazards from aquatic vegetation.

Water

Quarry lake with a surface area of 17.3 hectares, maximum depth of 14.1 meters, and average depth of 5 meters. The southern part has two bathing coves: Cove I extends 250 meters along the shore with 8–15 meter width alternating between meadow and sand; Cove II extends 210 meters with 20–35 meter width and meadow surface. The eastern and northern shores are steep with 375 and 570 meters length respectively and 2–3 meter width. Used for fishing and sport diving in addition to swimming.

Location

Located immediately northeast of Walldorf in the municipality of Mörfelden-Walldorf. Accessible from Walldorf or the B 44 via Aschaffenburger Straße. A fee-based parking lot is available at the entrance. Entry to the bathing area is free.

Facilities

Toilets, showers, changing cabins, and kiosk available. Average visitor count of 80–100 swimmers.

Season

Official bathing season from 9 May 2026 to 27 September 2026.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality. Oligotrophic trophic status with minimal risk of future cyanobacteria blooms. No observed mass occurrence of cyanobacteria during bathing season. Monitoring results from 2021–2025 show consistently low indicator bacteria levels (enterococci and E. coli). No known hygenic burden from wastewater, stormwater, or rainwater discharges. No nutrient loading present. No hygenic hazard from direct environmental inputs identified.

Risks

Aquatic vegetation present, particularly strong underwater plant growth in summer. Western shore closed for bathing due to vegetation hazards. Cyanobacteria can cause allergic reactions or skin irritation in case of mass occurrence. Waterfowl monitoring recommended as precaution.
