Waldsee Raunheim

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Waldsee Raunheim is a gravel extraction lake surrounded by forest, located approximately 25 km west of Frankfurt near Raunheim between motorways A67 and A3. The bathing area covers about 2.5 hectares on the western shore with a gently sloping sandy beach. The lake has designated swimming and non-swimming areas, facilities including a lakehouse with dining, changing rooms, sanitary facilities, a water platform, and a pirate ship with slide for children. A wake-board facility has been available since 2013.

Water

Gravel extraction lake (Baggersee) formed from connected basin sections. Surface area 21.6 hectares (expanding to over 22 hectares). Maximum depth 22.23 metres. Average depth 8.6 metres. Water is typically clear but slightly turbid in the western bathing area due to ongoing gravel extraction.

Location

Raunheim, approximately 25 km west of Frankfurt. Located between motorways A67 and A3, on the eastern side of Raunheim. From motorway A3 towards Raunheim, follow Kelsterbacher Straße southward over the railway to the second roundabout to reach the parking area at Aschaffenburger Schneise. Beach entrance is north of the parking area after a short walk.

Facilities

Lakehouse with gastronomy, changing rooms with lockers, sanitary facilities, water platform, non-swimmer area, pirate ship with slide for children, FKK (naturist) area, areas designated for swimmers and non-swimmers, wake-board facility.

Season

15 May 2026 to 15 September 2026.

Water Quality

Outstanding water quality classification (Ausgezeichnete Qualität) as of 2025. Monitoring conducted twice before the season begins and at least monthly during the season. Testing measures indicator bacteria (Enterococci and Escherichia coli), water temperature, pH, visibility depth, and cyanobacteria. No known pollution from wastewater, combined sewer, or stormwater discharges. Nutrient loading is low. No recorded mass cyanobacteria blooms during bathing season.

Risks

Shallow areas pose a hazard. Fine water turbidity in the western bathing area due to gravel extraction. Short-term cyanobacteria bloom cannot be excluded despite low nutrient loading; cyanobacteria can release substances causing allergic reactions or skin irritation. Oligotrophic classification suggests minimal future risk of mass cyanobacteria development.
