Langener Waldsee is a large gravel pit lake with a surface area of 89.1 hectares located approximately 12 kilometres south of Frankfurt. The lake is surrounded by forest and lies northwest of Langen and east of Walldorf directly adjacent to the B44 highway. It is one of the most popular and frequently visited lakes in the Rhine-Main region, used for bathing, fishing, sailing, and windsurfing, and serves as the swimming venue for Ironman Germany in Frankfurt. The lake has maximum depths of 19.2 metres and average depths of 8.6 metres, with steep shores that make water access available only through designated bathing beaches.

Gravel pit lake. Surface area: 89.1 hectares. Maximum depth: 19.2 metres. Average depth: 8.6 metres. Oligotrophic classification. Summer thermal stratification develops in most areas due to depth, though disrupted near active dredging operations. Fine turbidity present due to ongoing gravel extraction. Steep shorelines.

Location

Located approximately 12 kilometres south of Frankfurt, northeast of Langen town, east of Walldorf, directly adjacent to the B44 highway. Access to the bathing area is via Sehring-Straße from the B44. A campground with approximately 80 parking spaces is available on the grounds.

Facilities

Toilets, showers, changing rooms, kiosk. Separated nudist (FKK) bathing area. Four beach volleyball courts and two table tennis tables. Sun canopies and scattered trees for shade. Campground with approximately 80 spaces. Main bathing beach 360 metres long with average width of 77 metres; FKK beach approximately 375 metres long with average width of 25 metres.

14 May 2026 to 13 September 2026.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent water quality as of 2025. Monitoring results from 2021–2025 consistently show Enterococcus and Escherichia coli levels below or at 10 KBE/100ml. No known pollution from wastewater, stormwater, or surface runoff. Low nutrient loading and minimal risk of cyanobacterial blooms. No mass occurrence of cyanobacteria observed during bathing season. Water bird populations are present and monitored.

Risks

Water plants grow excessively but are natural to the lake; regularly mowed to maintain bathing access. Fine water turbidity from ongoing gravel extraction. Large water bird population present. Peak weekend visitor numbers around 10,000 daily in summer season; parking capacity becomes exhausted early on sunny weekends.
