Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Waldschwimmbad Rüsselsheim is a 3.1-hectare lake located 25 km southwest of Frankfurt on the eastern edge of Rüsselsheim. The lake was created in 1969 when sand was excavated for highway construction. The shoreline is shallow with generally clear water maintained by aeration systems. Swimming is possible along the entire shoreline, with access via Amselstraße from the northern shore.

Water

Quarry lake (Baggersee) with a water surface area of 3.1 hectares, maximum depth of 7.9 meters, and average depth of 4.2 meters. The lake is equipped with a depth aeration system that disrupts thermal stratification.

Location

Located on the eastern edge of Rüsselsheim am Main, 25 km southwest of Frankfurt. Access is from the northern shore via Amselstraße. Residential buildings are approximately 150 meters away.

Facilities

Approximately 60-meter sandy beach approximately 15 meters wide on the northwestern shore, picnic areas, pedal boat dock, paddleboat, toilets, showers, changing cabins, and three kiosk facilities. Average daily visitor count is 500.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality (Ausgezeichnete Qualität) for 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, and 2021. Water is monitored for enterococci and Escherichia coli before the season begins and at least monthly during the season. Nutrient loading and algae/cyanobacteria development are classified as moderate. No known pollution from wastewater, stormwater, or surface runoff. Risk of cyanobacteria bloom cannot be excluded. High waterfowl populations present a hygienic concern.

Risks

Moderate nutrient loading and potential for cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, though no mass occurrences have been observed during bathing seasons since 2005. High waterfowl populations present a hygienic concern.
