Baia Belvedere is a rocky coastal bathing area with sandy and pebbly beach within a sheltered cove, located in the Portofino Marine Protected Area. The area is characterized by rich vegetation of flowering plants and conifers with few dwellings. Water quality was classified as good for the 2020–2023 four-year assessment period. The bathing water is situated in a low-urbanization context within the protected marine zone.

Water

Coastal marine water body (Portofino–Zoagli). Rocky coast with sandy and pebbly beach in an inlet. Area extent is 0.780 km².

Location

Portofino, Genova province, Liguria region. Provincial Road 227 runs above the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Good (2020–2023 assessment period). Sewer discharge occurs approximately 410 m west of the sampling station and approximately 200 m east of the sampling station at 200 m distance from the beach. No treatment plants are present within the bathing water. Port-related pollution from the Portofino tourist port located approximately 620 m west of the sampling station (outside the bathing water). Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have occurred in the region; reference station at Zoagli recorded exceedance of 30,000 cells/litre in July 2022 and values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in June 2022.

Risks

Heavy rainfall can increase stream flow and cause transport of sewage downstream into the bathing water via the Fossato Niasca stream mouth, which discharges directly into the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae can produce toxins causing temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals when inhaled as aerosol.
