San Giorgio is a bathing water area located in Portofino, Liguria, characterized by a steep cliff face rising directly from the sea. The area has no residential settlements except those near the Church of San Giorgio. Forests of angiosperms and conifers extend inland from the coastal cliff.

Water

Coastal water body (Rio Valle Vescini catchment basin) with an area of 1.866 hectares. The water body is classified as Coastal Waters with Mountainous Features and Low Stability (CWA3).

Location

Portofino, Genova Province, Liguria Region. Competent authorities include the Municipality of Portofino (Piazza Della Libertà 13B, tel 0185/26771), ASL 4 (Via G. B. Ghio 9, tel 0185 329111), and Guardia Costiera (via Magazzini Generali n. 4, tel 01027771).

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2008–2011). No coastal treatment plants, discharge pipelines, or Imhoff tanks are present. No cyanobacterial blooms have been recorded; the Ligurian Sea is characterized by oligotrophic conditions. No cases of potentially toxic algal strains have occurred in the past four years.

Risks

Short-term pollution event identification and anomalous situation characterization are under development using a modelling approach.
