Location

Portofino, Genova province, Liguria region. The Provincial Road 227 of Portofino runs inland from the beach.

Water Quality

Classification: Good (2021-2024 four-year evaluation). A sewage pipeline approximately 150 meters east of the sampling station discharges internally through the bathing water and releases offshore. Pollution sources include port-related contamination from Portofino tourist marina, located approximately 200 meters west of the sampling station outside the bathing water.

Risks

During heavy rainfall, increased stream flow from Rio Fondaco may transport sewage downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have been recorded in the regional monitoring network; a threshold exceedance (30,000 cells/liter) occurred in July 2022 at the reference station in Zoagli, and values between 10,000-30,000 cells/liter were recorded in June 2022. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata causes temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and possible fever in sensitive individuals.
