Ballen Nord is a bathing beach located immediately north of Ballen Harbour in Samsø Kommune, Denmark. The beach has a width of 15–20 metres with a sandy bottom and gradual depth, reaching 2 metres approximately 125 metres from the shoreline. Water currents alternate between northward and southward directions and are generally weak. The bathing water quality is classified as excellent based on data from the previous four years.

Location

Ballen Nord, immediately north of Ballen Harbour, Samsø Kommune, Denmark. The hinterland consists of urban development.

Water Quality

Bathing water quality is classified as excellent. The town of Ballen is served by a combined sewer system with overflow points: three overflow structures (UC 12/22/23) discharge diluted wastewater to Møgelmose Rende/Ballen Harbour; one overflow structure (UC 25/26) discharges directly to the sea 350 metres south of the harbour. Discharges from the three overflow structures to the harbour are unlikely to significantly impact bathing water quality south of the harbour but may potentially reduce water quality in the beach area north of the harbour.

Risks

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms can occur during specific current directions and after several days of calm, warm weather; consult local advisories against bathing if blooms occur. Macroalgae (seaweed) and phytoplankton blooms can produce toxins in decaying seaweed and shield pathogenic bacteria from UV degradation; bathing near large quantities of seaweed in the shoreline is not recommended.
