Kolby Kås is a bathing water located at a campsite in Samsø Municipality, Denmark. The beach has a sandy bottom with a width of 10 to 15 metres. The water depth reaches 2 metres approximately 100 metres from the shore. Currents in the area alternate between north and south directions and are predominantly weak. The bathing water quality has been classified as excellent based on data from the last four years.

Water

Coastal sea bathing water with sandy bottom. Beach width 10–15 metres. Water depth 2 metres at approximately 100 metres from the shore edge. Currents predominantly weak, alternating between north and south directions.

Location

Kolby Kås, Samsø Municipality, Denmark. Access to the beach is via a path from the road at the north pier. The bathing area is located at a campsite with surrounding residential parcels in the catchment area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Based on four years of monitoring data. Occasional elevated bacterial counts, typically registered 1–2 times yearly at the measurement point, due to risk of untreated wastewater discharge during heavy rainfall via three overflow structures (UD01, UD03, UD04). Classification expected to fluctuate between Excellent and Good until sewage separation occurs and wastewater is diverted to the Ballen Treatment Plant. Dallebæk stream, discharging north of the beach, is a pollution source due to treated wastewater input from parts of Kolby and Hårdmark.

Risks

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms may occur during specific current directions and after several days of calm, warm weather. Large quantities of seaweed at the shore edge pose a risk as toxins can form in decaying seaweed and seaweed can shield disease-causing bacteria from UV degradation. Untreated wastewater may be discharged during heavy rainfall via three overflow structures.
