Ballen Strandgård is a bathing beach located immediately south of Ballen Harbour on the island of Samsø. The beach has a width of 10–20 metres with a sandy bottom. Water depth reaches 2 metres approximately 125 metres from the shore. The water quality is classified as excellent based on data from the last four years. Currents are generally weak and alternate between northerly and southerly directions.

Location

Ballen, Samsø Municipality, Denmark. Access is easiest from the south mole of Ballen Harbour or directly from holiday homes in Ballen town. The beach is located immediately south of Ballen Harbour.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. The town has a combined sewer system that causes overflow of diluted wastewater during heavy rain at four structures. Three structures (UC 12/22/23) discharge to Møgelmose Rende/Ballen Harbour; one structure (UC 26) discharges directly to the sea 350 metres south of the harbour. Discharge from the harbour-bound structures has minimal impact on bathing water quality south of the harbour but may reduce water quality north of the harbour. The direct discharge (UC 26) is considered critical for water quality during northerly currents. Effluent from Ballen treatment plant discharges 650 metres south of the harbour via an outfall 200 metres into the sea, achieving significant dilution with minimal negative effect on faecal indicator bacteria at the measurement point.

Risks

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms can occur during specific current directions and after several days of calm, warm weather; check for information advising against bathing. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) at the water's edge may indicate toxin formation in decaying seaweed and can protect disease-causing bacteria from UV degradation; bathing near macroalgae is not recommended.
