Lithuania Lake 1 - Excellent

Baltajo ežero maudykla is a public bathing area located on Lake Baltasis in the Lazdijų district of Lithuania. The beach features a natural shoreline with sand and has been monitored for water quality since 2008 according to EU Directive 2006/7/EB. From 2018 to 2024, the water quality consistently met excellent quality standards. The lake has been designated as an ornithological reserve since 1967.

Water

Lake Baltasis. The beach is 100 metres long. Average water depth is 1.5 metres; maximum depth is 2.5 metres. Annual average precipitation in the basin is 550 millimetres, with October recording the highest precipitation and September the lowest. Average annual discharge is 10.8 cubic metres per second, with February showing the highest and September the lowest discharge.

Location

Lazdijų district, Lithuania. The bathing area is located on Lake Baltasis in the Šešupė sub-basin within the Nemunas river basin.

Facilities

One stationary toilet. Children's play and recreation area. Waste bins are located at the beach and near pedestrian paths. Waste collection follows a scheduled programme.

Water Quality

Water quality classification from 2011 to 2024 shows excellent quality (indicated by symbol) throughout the entire monitoring period. Monitoring was last updated in 2024. The profile notes that phosphorus and nitrogen levels were not tested, and no studies on cyanobacteria, macroalgae, or marine phytoplankton distribution have been conducted. No concentrated pollution sources are present in the impact zone. No dispersed pollution sources capable of negatively affecting the bathing area are identified.

Risks

Possible surface runoff of rainwater during adverse weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall, could potentially affect water quality. No short-term pollution sources have been recorded at this bathing area in the past four years. The lake's designation as an ornithological reserve since 1967 is noted.
