Lithuania Lake 1 - Excellent

Metelio ežero maudykla is a bathing site located on Lake Metelys in the Lazdijų district of Lithuania. The beach features natural shoreline with sandy substrate extending 200 meters. Water depth ranges from an average of 2 meters to a maximum of 3 meters. The bathing water has maintained excellent quality status from 2018 to 2024 in accordance with EU Directive 2006/7/EB requirements. The site is situated within the Metelys Regional Park, which is protected under the Habitats Directive and Birds Directive.

Water

Lake Metelys (Metelio ežeras), a freshwater lake in the Neman River basin. Beach length is 200 meters. Average water depth is 2 meters, maximum depth is 3 meters. Annual rainfall in the basin is 550 mm, with October being the month of highest precipitation and September the month of lowest precipitation.

Location

Located in Lazdijų district, Seirijų municipality, Lithuania. The site is part of the Metelys Regional Park. Coordinates: X=54.3051, Y=23.7464. Maximum visitor capacity is approximately 300 people during peak season under favorable weather conditions.

Facilities

Outdoor toilet (lauko tipo tualetas). Playground (žaidimų aikštelė). Waste container (šiukšlių konteineris). Unsorted waste and rubbish are collected and disposed of according to waste removal contracts.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (puiki) from 2018 to 2024. The water body is classified as Type 2 and has good ecological potential, meeting requirements for good ecological status/good ecological potential. No concentrated pollution sources, dispersed pollution sources, or upstream surface water bodies that could negatively affect water quality are present in the impact zone.

Risks

Short-term pollution possible during heavy rainfall, with pollution disappearing within 1-2 days after rain ceases. No issues with cyanobacteria, macroalgae, or marine phytoplankton have been recorded. Phosphorus and nitrogen levels were not monitored, but water transparency was observed.
