Nice maintains 26 bathing water monitoring sites distributed along the coastline between La Lanterne and Coco Beach. The bathing season runs from 1 June to 30 September. Water quality is assessed through weekly bacteriological controls measuring Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci levels. Results are interpreted according to ANSES thresholds established under European Directive 2006/7/CE. The municipality implements preventive measures and closure procedures when pollution thresholds are exceeded.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on two parameters: Escherichia coli (threshold 1000 per 100 ml) and intestinal enterococci (threshold 370 per 100 ml). Good quality is defined as levels below these thresholds. Pollution sources include domestic, urban, industrial, and agricultural activities, as well as sewerage networks and stormwater systems. The Regional Health Agency (Agence Régionale de Santé) evaluates and classifies bathing water quality.

Bacteriological pollution from sewage systems and rainwater overflow. Chemical pollution including pesticides, nitrates, phosphates, heavy metals, PCBs, and hydrocarbons. Physical pollution from suspended matter. Thermal pollution. Temporary sewage discharge from the Haliotis treatment station. Proliferation of the algae Ostreopsis ovata.
