Bleiloch Talsperre Kloster

Bleilochstausee at Saalburg Kloster is a bathing site located on the eastern shore of the Bleiloch reservoir in Thuringia. The beach area features a gentle slope with natural gravel or grass, and benefits from the narrowest point of the reservoir with a width of approximately 1–1.5 km between shores. The site is situated in a rural, idyllic location surrounded by extensive forested areas, primarily spruce forests. The reservoir was completed in 1932 for electricity generation and flood control, holding 215 million cubic meters of water over a length of 28 km. The bathing area is used for swimming, sailing, and surfing.

Water

Artificial reservoir (Stausee) on the Saale river. Water surface area: 9.2 km². Elevation: 410 m above sea level at normal water level. Dam height: 58.5 m. Water renewal time: approximately 190 days. Average water temperature: 18–20°C. The main inflows are the Saale (mean discharge 11.5 m³/s) and Wettera (mean discharge <0.5 m³/s).

Location

Saalburg-Ebersdorf municipality, in the village of Kloster (60 residents) which is part of the city of Saalburg (915 residents). The site is accessible via relatively flat terrain in an open valley. Limited parking is available at the campsite and boat rental facility. Coordinates: 11.7309° longitude, 50.5161° latitude.

Facilities

Toilets (near campsite), meadows for lounging, kiosk (seasonal at Kloster), boat rental, campsite with weekend houses. Lifeguards, showers, disabled access, and bathing flags are not mentioned.

Water Quality

Ecological classification: ÖKZ 2–3 (good to moderate). The water body is mesotrophic to eutrophic. At the dam monitoring point (2008), the ecological class was ÖKZ 2 (good). Saale river (upstream): ÖKZ 3 (moderate), Saprobie moderate (2004). Wettera: ÖKZ 2–3 (good to moderate). Identified pollution sources include: partial biological wastewater treatment from the campsite, mixed sewage from settlements (Kloster and Gräfenwarth) combined with stormwater, surface runoff from agricultural areas, and stormwater from sealed surfaces.

Risks

Cyanobacteria risk classified as low. Macrophytes and filamentous algae (Lemna) present at low level. No risks from bird feces, cercarial dermatitis, or other health hazards are mentioned. Wastewater from the campsite is discharged into deep water via full biological treatment and partial biological treatment. Potential concern from untreated mixed stormwater during heavy rainfall from settlements upstream.
