Hohenwarte-Stausee is a popular recreation area in central Thuringia formed by damming the Saale River. The reservoir stretches 27 km through fjord-like landscape in a valley up to 1 km wide and holds approximately 182 million cubic meters of water. It is part of the 79.8 km long Saale cascade. The CP Droschkau bathing area is located on a peninsula near Altenroth with a shallow beach suitable for children.
