Hohenwarte-Stausee is a popular recreational area in central Thuringia, formed by the dammed Saale River. The reservoir extends 27 km through fjord-like valley landscape, holding approximately 182 million cubic metres of water and forming part of the 79.8 km long Saale cascade. The CP Hopfenmühle bathing area is located approximately midway along the reservoir, downstream from Drognitz. The beach slopes gently, making it ideal for children.

Water

Reservoir (artificial lake) with a water surface area of 7.6 km², maximum depth of 68 m, and elevation of 298 m above sea level. The ecological status class is ÖKZ 1 (very good) with oligotrophic trophic level. Shore composition includes sand, gravel, stone, and grassland.

Location

Located in Drognitz municipality. The bathing area can be reached via Saalfeld in the direction of Kaulsdorf–Hohenwarte–Drognitz, with directional signs at the entrance to Drognitz. Parking is available at the facility.

Reception, sanitary building with kitchen facilities, small restaurant, toilets, recreational meadows, kiosk, parking.

Water Quality

Ecological status class ÖKZ 1 (very good) with oligotrophic trophic characteristics. No pollution sources from wastewater discharge, industrial activities, small treatment plants, combined sewer overflows, or cooling water discharges have been identified. Camping facilities are present in the catchment area.
