Water

Lake Constance (Bodensee), a natural lake. Surface area: 536 km². Maximum water depth: 251.14 m. Mean water level elevation: 395.23 m above sea level. Water renewal time: 2 years. Mean visibility depth: greater than 2–5 m. The Rhine river flows into the lake with a mean discharge of 372 m³/s from a very large catchment area (11,500 km²). Artificial water level fluctuations are less than 0.5 m during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (grade 1) for years 2014–2017. Ecological status class: ÖZK 1 (very good), oligotrophic. The Rhine, the main inflow, has ecological status class ÖZK 1 (very good).

Risks

Potential for short-term pollution from storms causing sediment resuspension, lasting approximately 1–3 days depending on weather conditions. Driftwood accumulations occur with frequency and duration dependent on water inputs and current direction. No known risk of cyanobacteria blooms, macrophytes or filamentous algae blooms, tar-based residues or litter, bird droppings, or cercarial dermatitis.
