Borgo Prino Isola Centrale is a sandy-pebbly bathing area located within artificial inlets on the Ligurian coast near Imperia. The area is situated in an urbanized context with private and public beach establishments, restaurants, and accommodation facilities. The coastline consists of a series of beaches enclosed within alternate artificial cliffs. The bathing water received an excellent classification for the 2021-2024 four-year assessment period.

Water

Coastal water body with an area of 1.252 km². The water is characterized as having low stability (CWA3 mountain runoff category). The water body is named Imperia and is fed by the Torrente Prino stream.

Location

Imperia, Liguria region, Italy. The bathing area is located to the west of Porto Maurizio. Nearby infrastructure includes the Colombo waterfront promenade, the Fiori cycling path, the Lagorio athletics field, and the SS1 road.

Facilities

Private and public beach establishments with associated services, restaurants, and accommodation structures are present.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (2021-2024 assessment period). The Ligurian Sea is characterized by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacterial blooms. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have occurred in Liguria over the past decade; however, monitoring at the reference station in Diano Marina showed no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit from 2020 to 2024.

Risks

An emergency sewage pipe located approximately 90 m west of the sampling station discharges offshore. During upstream criticalities and meteorological precipitation, increased stream flow from Torrente Prino may transport effluent downstream. Torrente Prino meets the western boundary of the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata can produce temporary and reversible respiratory effects through aerosol inhalation in sensitive individuals.
